Lions and other wild cats

==============================================

Keep in mind that lions spend 20 hours every day asleep. And it was a very hot day at Schotia Animal Preserve so the only time we got to see lions upright was at night after we had supper in a wonderful outdoor dining area.

Below: on the way to the waterhole. That is the front bumper on our land rover. We were advised to stay within the framework of the vehicle so as not to be seen as prey. We complied!

Ceracal – described as “The largest African lesser cat and an exceptional climber and jumper, the caracal is a slenderly built cat with long legs and a short, sharply tapered tail. The Caracal resembles a cross between a leopard and a lynx.” This one was a baby and an extremely rare sighting. Our guide said she only sees them maybe twice a year.

The above pictures made us realize we need a camera with a better zoom lens. The Ceracal did treat us to a pounce after a bird in the bushes but we could not capture it on camera.

On another day, we went to the Tenikwa Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre to see a variety of wild cats.  Below is the Serval cat – which has spots and stripes. They are endangered, as are all cats at this rehab center – including leopards, cheetah and African Wild Cats, which look like a large house cat and can, in fact, breed with house cats.
