Kalk Bay, Betty’s Bay and at the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens

=====================================

On the 3rd day we were in Cape Town, our friends took us to a musical performance in Kalk Bay. This drive is along the hillsides and overlooks False Bay, so called because it was frequently mistaken for Table Bay, where ships sailing to the Atlantic from the Indian Ocean were heading to off-load products and pick up supplies.

The next fantastic place we traveled was to Harold Porter National Botanical Garden, which included a stop at Betty’s Bay, where a large colony of penguins – the  ones that were rescued from the oil spill – are located. Check out the Penguins page for these guys.

The drive up gave us beautiful views of False Bay and the incredible landscape of the Eastern Cape.

To quote from the The Harold Porter National Botanical Garden’s web page – “the garden lies in the heart of the Cape fynbos region – a dedication to this natural shrubland vegetation with 10 hectares of cultivated fynbos garden, and a further 190 hectares of natural fynbos to gratify the visitor. The peaceful garden includes sweeping mountain slopes, deep gorges, and four vegetation types that occur naturally in the Overberg – afro montane forests, wetlands, coastal dunes and fynbos. Harold Porter is a magical display of proteas, ericas and leucadendrons set amidst meandering nature trails that take one up mountains, down gorges and through gardens in which some 60 species of bird, including the Cape sugarbird and the orange breasted sunbird, come to play. ”

On the way home, the landscapes were just as majestic.

This last picture above shows a common cloud formation called the tablecloth. Common on Table Mountain at Cape Town, it also happens whenever a low-flying cloud comes across one of the mountains.
